💡 Explanation
In Norway, all pregnant women are offered free prenatal check-ups with a midwife and/or general practitioner. It is common to have around nine check-ups throughout the pregnancy, and an ultrasound at week 18 is part of this. The purpose of the check-ups is to monitor the health of both mother and child, and to provide support and information to the pregnant woman. The check-ups are completely free.
During the check-ups, blood pressure, blood tests, and fetal development are checked among other things. The pregnant woman also receives advice on diet, physical activity, and what is advisable to avoid. If needed, additional follow-up can be provided, and it is possible to have an early ultrasound and other tests.
Prenatal check-ups also aim to provide security and prepare parents for birth and parenthood. One can choose whether to see a midwife or general practitioner, and it is common to combine both. Attention is also given to mental health and how one is coping in daily life.
